In a powerful move towards rectifying historical injustices, New Haven is taking steps to establish a Historically Black College/University (HBCU) satellite campus, a decision that carries significant weight and potential for the city's future. This initiative, which has gained momentum in recent years, aims to address a wrong committed nearly two centuries ago when racist city leaders thwarted the establishment of a Black college.
The proposal, approved by the Board of Alders, seeks state funding to initiate the planning process for this ambitious project. The Connecticut Historically Black College & University Alumni Network and the Elicker Administration are leading the charge, applying for a Community Investment Fund (CIF) grant to kickstart the early stages of development.
One of the key aspects of this proposal is the focus on community engagement and education. Approximately $55,000 of the requested funds will be allocated towards supporting college tours and fairs, connecting current New Haven students with HBCU opportunities. This not only provides a pathway for students to explore these institutions but also serves as a bridge to the past, acknowledging the city's history and its role in shaping the present.
The roots of this initiative can be traced back to 1831 when abolitionists attempted to establish the nation's first higher education institution for Black men in New Haven. However, both the city and state authorities blocked this proposal, with the state going as far as passing a law in 1883 to prohibit out-of-state Black individuals from accessing education in Connecticut. This decision, driven by the fear of interfering with other states' practices of enslavement, highlights a dark chapter in the city's history and underscores the need for reconciliation and progress.
The proposed HBCU satellite campus aims to address this historical wrong and create opportunities for Black residents in New Haven's fastest-growing sectors. Economic Development Officer Malachi Bridges, a key planner on the proposal, emphasizes the potential for this initiative to honor the historic movement for a Black college while also making local economic opportunities more accessible.
The vision for the campus includes new research and lab buildings at Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU), creating hubs for HBCU students, and potentially replacing parking lots with an Ethnic Culture Center and Museum. Washington Academy.
